Spiritual Torrents edition by Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon Religion Spirituality eBooks
This book along with other books by Jeanne Guyon takes you through the maze of various temptations, trials, victories of the Christian walk. Written in the late 17th century, from a Catholic point of view, you may find yourself in one of the many stages which the author describes from her own experience. There is a preface of sorts penned by the publisher in which he emphasizes what is written is solely Guyon's experience and probably not that of the contemporary Christian; however, given the variety of religious experiences to be witnessed across the decades, even our 21st century Christian probably has touched the hem of many. Very sobering, ultra realistic, this book will give you much to consider as you mature in Christ.Product details

Spiritual Torrents edition by Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Ms. Guyon's books are of the most highly honored books in my collection. Spiritual Torrents is on the top of that list. If you want to learn about the deeper walk with Christ, then you need to invest in Guyon's series of books. She also has several commentary books available as well. This book is, in my opinion, the sequel to "Experiencing The Depths of Jesus Christ". I would, and have, read them many times over.
One of my favorite books. Some people don't like this book because it shows that suffering when rightly understood can bring us closer to God. Madam Jean Guyon is definitely a mystic, and her love for her Savior is aways in the fore-front of all her writings. This book will take you deeper in your relationship with God and give you an understanding that even if you don't love suffering, nobody really does, at least you don't have to waste your sufferings, but grow by them.
This book is for those who want to walk deeper in the Lord. Those that find this book appealing probably have been on this journey of knowing God somewhat differently than others. The usual bible study and conventional ways of fulfilling religious duties, though necessary, still leave them wanting more. But, more of what? As God takes them on this road, He allows them to experience dryness without a seeming offense against God. What the Christian community often describes the "dark night of the soul" is not really the dark night, but the call of God to walk deeply with Him. That said, those that are being led by God to undergo the journey could be perplexed by the various experiences, mistaking it for God's abandonment or absence. Spiritual Torrents helps to articulate various experiences a man or a woman who has entered this journey with God and be comforted by the faithful and loving movement of God to unite our souls with His.
Not for the faint of hear!.It truly tests your definition of dying to self and I think is best understood by those who are being taken through this death personally by the Holy Spirit. No matter how deep you go, remember that losing yourself is worth gaining Christ.
As my title indicates, you will doubtless either love or hate this work of baroque Christian mysticism, depending on your interests and the stage of your own spiritual journey. Guyon is not an easy read. Her metaphors and imagery can be at times obscure and at times disconcerting- even grotesque. She was the genuine article. however, and sincerely believed in her visions and her mission to evangelize. To borrow a quote from the Bard, for Guyon the "time was out of joint/ O cursed spite". She was a Counter-Reformation, Baroque mystic in the tradition of a Teresa of Avila living however at the end of the 17th century in France, a time of scientific and intellectual progress which had little use for Christian mystics. A century earlier- even in France- she would probably have been canonized as a saint. As it was, she was condemned by the Church as a madwoman and a heretic.
Still, if you are interested in the history of Christian mysticism or in French 17th century history in general, she is a woman who deserves- nay, demands- to be read and studied. She influenced such major authors as Bossuet and Fenelon (in very different ways, of course) and her influence was felt long after her death all across Europe (John and Charles Wesley read and admired her work.)
Very difficult to give a meaningful star rating to this very special and specialized book. Here is a cloistered woman writing from her soul about 300 years ago. As a religious artifact of the time past it rates a five star. As a page turner for today's readers, it might not rate any stars. This book is of immense value to anyone studying the religious developments of the 17th and 18th centuries and the power struggles among the several RC sects, especially the Jesuits. The book does not enter the struggles. It deals with Guyon's vision of the soul as a torrent seeking God. She is influenced by the Spanish Jesuit Molino who advocated the way of peace and passivity.
Note A modernized and adulterated version of this manuscript is being sold under the title,
"Spiritual Torrents", by seedsowers.com. If you possess a copy of the seedsower's version,
you would be advised to compare it closely to this old manuscript. There seems to be very
little similarity between it and Marston's English translation, although the cover of the
seedsower's version labels it as having been written by Madame Guyon.
